PLANTING FOR COLOUR

THE PLACE - A detached contemporary house in St Albans with a large west-facing garden. The clients had a beautiful limestone patio and outdoor kitchen installed and at the back of the garden, a children’s play area with swings and fort. However, the new generous patio area was not connected to the rest of the garden.

THE BRIEF

The main intention was to connect the house to the garden and segment the garden into enclosed garden rooms using new planting beds. Our clients wanted to introduce lots of new planting. There was also a spot in the garden that benefited from the late afternoon sun where it would be good to position a seat or arbour.

THE DESIGN

We brought in lots of new textures and colours into the garden with the planting. New beds were created to enclose a more formal lawn area accessed directly from the patio, which also partially screened the play area and fort which were previously a dominant view.

Instant yew hedging was used to provide a dark green foil to the new planting of ornamental grasses and colourful perennials. A contemporary pergola was installed for an existing mature wisteria and new climbing plants, linking the planting beds with white barked birch trees used as focal points from the house.

A new seating area was created near the pergola and architectural olive trees planted in raised beds within the patio.
